چکیده

Location and selection of an oviposition site is an essential part of the life history of all mosquito species. The remarkable number of oviposition be haviors range from the common, e.g. deposition of eggs on or near the water surface, to the unusual, e.g. egg brooding by adult females (73, 74). The initiation of an ovipositional flight is linked with environmental factors, especially rainfall, relative humidity, temperature, and wind speed. The location and selection of an oviposition site involves visual, olfactory, and tactile responses. Since pathogen acquisition by vector mosquitoes usually requires the taking of at least one blood meal, disease transmission usually requires the comple tion of at least one oviposition cycle before pathogen transfer can occur with a subsequent blood meal. Oviposition is thus an important component of most mosquito-borne diseases. A tremendous amount has been written concerning mosquito oviposition. A large proportion of the studies have dealt with laboratory investigations on mosquito response to chemical and physical aspects of the oviposition site; relatively few field studies have been attempted. In this review we discuss general aspects of mosquito oviposition in nature, as well as the interplay

Oviposition habitat selection by Anopheles gambiae in response to chemical cues by Notonecta maculata.

A number of mosquito species avoid predator-inhabited oviposition sites by detecting predator-released kairomones. In the laboratory, we found that when offered de-ionized water and de-ionized water conditioned with Notonecta maculata, gravid Anopheles gambiae females preferentially oviposited into the former. We then conducted further experiments using two chemical components found in Notonect...

Oviposition habitat selection by a mosquito in response to a predator: are predator-released kairomones air-borne cues?

Chemical cues play an important role in predator-prey interactions in aquatic environments (e.g., Petranka et al. 1987, Dodson et al. 1994, Wisenden 2000). Predator-released kairomones may induce morphological changes in prey (e.g., Laurila et al. 2004, Von-Bert and Stibor 2006), foraging changes by prey (e.g., McCarthy and Dickey 2002, Turner and Montgomery 2003), and behavioral responses of g...

Behavioral evidence for the existence of a region-specific oviposition cue in Anopheles gambiae s.s.

Understanding oviposition behavior is important to behavioral and vector ecologists because of its potential use in developing vector control strategies for insect-borne infectious diseases. Our study compared the oviposition behaviors of Anopheles gambiae s.s mosquitoes from two different regions of East Africa, Mbita Point, Kenya and Ifakara, Tanzania. The work sought behavioral evidence for ...

Non-larvicidal effects of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis and Bacillus sphaericus on oviposition and adult mortality of Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae).

Two microbial mosquito larvicides, Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. israelensis (Bti) and Bacillus sphaericus (Bsph), have been shown to be highly effective in controlling mosquito larvae and have been used in larvicidal programs for many years. In exploring other modes of action of these agents, we studied the ovipositional response of Bsph susceptible and resistant Culex quinquefasciatus to aqueou...
